Our intention with this site is to gather information, news and interviews to increase the general knowledge on this for many quite unknown product. If you are Nordic, you are most likely already familiar with the products and how they are used, but in most European countries smoking is still the norm for nicotine users, and the alternatives are few or emerging.
Nicotine pouches are not yet regulated as a specific product on a European Union level, and we consider this to be a problem for several reasons that will be highlighted on this forum. The situation is however developing. We are expecting the European Commission to propose relevant directives in the near future. There are national legislations being adopted or discussed in many member states. This is positive, but we need a coherent and clear European legislation that closes loopholes and removes the bad apples to protect consumers.
It is a concern that nicotine pouches could get less attention than it deserves when the main focus of the discussion will be on tobacco products. It is therefore our aim to contribute to a more well-informed discussion on nicotine pouches by making more voices available on this platform. Products containing nicotine should be regulated, with a view to health effects for the consumers, but there is also a wider array of issues that need to be addressed such as the protection of minors and not the least how the regulation of different products will affect the users’ preferences
This site is run by the Nordic Nicotine Pouches Alliance, an organisation convinced of the need for sound and well-balanced European regulation of nicotine pouches.
Our agenda and our positions are clear: Nicotine pouches are consumer products and should therefore have proper consumer labelling including product information and warnings. We support a complete ban on sales and marketing to minors. Manufacturing, ingredients, sales and promotion should be held to the highest industry standards proportional to the properties of the product. More and more member states of the EU have chosen this approach to their national legislations, and we hope to see more to do so in the coming year.
Starting today it is our ambition to become the main EU platform to discuss the different aspects of nicotine pouches, ranging from policy developments and scientific findings to voices from retailers and consumers. If you are someone with a story to tell, let us know.
